Workplace Management Routines (5/7): Clarifying Roles And Responsibilities

You tend to feel more ownership of a project or of your department’s work when your role and responsibilities in meeting the goal are clearly defined. Additionally, clarifying the roles of everyone in the work group.

  • Allows each group member as well as outside clients and resources a clear point-of-contact and authority when questions or problems arise, and

  • Allows for easier "tracking" of tasks, work flow, etc.

To help empower other through clear definition of roles, responsibilities and points of authority try the following:

  • Utilize clear, concise job descriptions for each member of your work group (whether in a department or on a project) to convey specific responsibilities, levels of authority etc. to everyone involved or affected by the group’s work.

  • Work with your Performance Consultant, HR Manager and/or other work group members to institute sharply focused job descriptions for each role if these do not already exist.

  • Review and update these job descriptions on a regular periodic basis to make sure that each member’s roles and responsibilities remain both clearly focused and viable.

  • Meet with others in your work group or on your team to discuss their current roles and responsibilities, as well as to discuss the impact their performance of these duties has on meeting the goals in question.

  • Work with project team or work group members to resolve any differences in role expectations and performance that may occur, and to fill any voids in responsibilities that may arise unexpectedly.
