What are the roles of managers? How the decision making role works?

Managerial positions require activities of managers in different areas of activities. Literally, manager must obtain different roles, depending on the business situation.

The roles of managers can be divided into three different groups: Interpersonal management roles, Informational management roles and Decision Making roles.

Interpersonal Roles

Interpersonal Roles comes directly from the authority, status and power that manager possess as a part of formal authority and managerial position. Interpersonal contacts are based on three interpersonal roles:Role of Managers - Way of Doing Business

  • Protocol leader is interpersonal role that manager obtains during official activities and ceremonies

  • Leader is managerial interpersonal role obtained through direct contact with employee, based on the authority and power of position

  • Liaison is interpersonal role of manager that is obtained through inter-relationship and communication outside the group of direct responsibility


Information Roles

Information Roles are the group of roles of managers related to gathering, processing and directing of information. Information roles are divided to:

  • Monitoring is the information role of manager that involves gathering of information related to internal operations, external events, analyzes, ideas and trends

  • Dissemination is the information role of manager where the manager is transmitting the information within the group or area of authority

  • Spokesman is information role of manager that involves transmission of message too. The difference is in the audience. The spokesman is transmitting message to the people outside the direct group of responsibility. The targeted audience can be internal (other department) or external ( customers, suppliers, media, ... )


Decision Making Roles

The roles of managers can be divided into three different groups: Interpersonal management roles, Informational management roles and Decision Making roles.

Decision making roles makes the core of managerial business. There are several decision making roles, divided by different concepts:

  • Entrepreneur is the managerial role that produces changes in processes, innovations, etc.

  • Disturbance handler is managerial role that has a purpose to manage different situations that becomes as the result of the different situations.

  • Resource allocator is the role where the manager is the central subject of making decision about allocation of resources.

  • Negotiator is the role of manager when it comes to negotiation different stakeholders: customers, union, suppliers, ...
    Managers are obtaining duties from their hierarchy level and function. This means that some managers will be focused more on one type of managerial roles, while other managers will be focused on another. Still all managers are performing all roles until a certain extent.
